Hike to Jaibalito and beyond
The Mayan Trail
● Distance: 10km
● Elevation Gain: 550m
● Time: 2.5-3 hrs
● Difficulty: Moderate
The Mayan Trail, also known as the Mayan Ridge Hike, is a popular independent hike along Lake Atitlan, stretching between Santa Cruz and San Marcos. The most scenic section is from Tzununá to Santa Cruz, offering outstanding views of the lake throughout. This single-track trail avoids slippery sections but includes a few steep spots, making it perfect for a morning hike with lunch options at both ends. Though robberies occur, hiking in a group and avoiding valuables minimizes risk. Despite this, the trail remains a must-try for every able-bodied walker.
Tzununá Ridge Hike
● Distance: 10.5km
● Elevation Gain: 1,200m
● Time: 4-5 hrs
● Difficulty: Very Strenuous
The Tzununá Ridge Hike offers a challenging adventure on Lake Atitlan's north side. Beginning with a climb out of Tzununá, it ascends to a low ridge and continues upward to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Tzununá and the entire lake. Although demanding, the hike rewards with unique views and a serene atmosphere. Despite its difficulty, it's among the best hikes around Lake Atitlan, providing a memorable experience for adventurous hikers.
The Tzununa Waterfall
● Distance: 3km
● Elevation Gain: 200m
● Time: 1-2.5 hrs
● Difficulty: Moderate
The Tzununa waterfall is a local hike to a cute little waterfall. Follow the road up from Saasil retreat to a bend in the road where the river continues straight, follow the trail and stream. Local kids will gladly show you the way for a few quetzals. Outstanding views of the lake throughout as well as passing through some small local farms and reforestation efforts make this a great hike to feel connected to our little Pueblo.
Continue your hiking, or TUK TUK into the nearby town of San Marcos. We can call you a TUK TUK, or if you just start walking an empty one will pass by offering you a ride.
Visit San Marcos
This town stands out for its lack of roads—instead, narrow footpaths wind through trees and buildings, guided by handmade signs at intersections. These homemade routes exude an intimate charm, shaped by plants and flowers that form fences, gently guiding travelers.
San Marcos epitomizes pure bliss and relaxation, offering activities centered around spiritual connection. Its laid-back culture is free from apparent worries, embodying a philosophy of embracing life as it unfolds.
Despite its tranquil vibe, San Marcos boasts a vibrant Mayan culture, celebrated through vivid clothing, artwork, and cuisine.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also find plenty to love, thanks to the town's proximity to a rich ecological reserve teeming with endangered species. The nearby lake offers direct enjoyment with swimming, sailing, kayaking, and thrilling cliff jumping—an activity popular just a ten-minute stroll from San Marcos' center.

Check out Circles Cafe and Bakery serving local coffee by qualified baristas, freshly baked sourdoughs, breads, pastries, sandwiches & more!
Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve
Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve in San Marcos, Guatemala, sits on the shores of Lake Atitlan, known for its stunning scenery. Visitors can hike its scenic trails and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna. Conservation efforts are also a priority, focusing on sustainable practices and environmental education. This blend of adventure and nature makes Cerro Tzankujil a must-visit for those wanting to explore Lake Atitlan's beauty.
On any given day, dozens of locals and tourists can be found swimming, cliff jumping, and sunbathing at the nature reserve. With dozens of benches and rock ledges, there is plenty of space for each visitor to take in the natural beauty of Lake Atitlan, observe the park’s unique geological formations, or read a good book. Even though it’s a popular spot, it never feels crowded.
Cerro Tzankujil stands out as a popular destination for thrill-seekers, thanks to its renowned cliff jumping spot featuring a 40-foot wooden deck. However, despite the seemingly safe setup, cliff jumping from such heights carries inherent risks. Though many take the plunge
without incident, stories of severe injuries serve as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers. Visitors should exercise caution and assess their own comfort level before deciding to leap into the unknown or simply enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.
Although Cerro Tzankujil is one of the best places to swim at the lake, here are Some things to keep in mind before taking a dip!
1. **Avoid High-Traffic Areas**: Swimmers must steer clear of public piers and boat lanes to prevent accidents caused by passing watercraft.
2. **Post-Swim Hygiene**: Lake Atitlan, like many bodies of water, contains natural and man-made contaminants that can pose health risks. To minimize exposure, swimmers should promptly shower with soap and water after their aquatic adventures.
3. **Prevent Ingestion of Water**: Ingesting lake water anywhere can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort and other health issues due to contaminants.
4. **Consider Individual Health Conditions**: Those with compromised immune systems, open wounds, or certain medical conditions should exercise extra caution before taking a dip in Lake Atitlan, or avoid it altogether.
5. **Select Swimming Spots Wisely**: Opting for less congested areas away from pollution sources like towns, and docks enhances the likelihood of a safe and enjoyable swimming experience.
Safety + Emergency Plan
While you're soaking in Guatemala's beauty, there are a few things to keep in mind. Guatemala is still developing, so expect unpaved streets and encounters with stray dogs of varying temperaments. Plastic waste can be an issue due to limited infrastructure, leading to accumulation or burning. While crime isn't common, it's wise to avoid sketchy situations, especially after sunset. As a tourist, you may encounter inflated prices, but don't hesitate to negotiate. A friendly 'Hola' or 'Buenos Dias' and a smile can work wonders, as most locals speak only Spanish, or their native Mayan.
