What to note
Important information not to overlook while you prepare for your trip.
IS GUATEMALA SAFE?
While you're soaking in Guatemala's beauty, there are a few things to keep in mind. Guatemala is still developing, so expect unpaved streets and encounters with stray dogs of varying temperaments. While crime isn't common, it's wise to avoid sketchy situations, especially after sunset. As a tourist, you may encounter inflated prices, but don't hesitate to negotiate. A friendly 'Hola' or 'Buenos Dias' and a smile can work wonders, as most locals speak only Spanish, or their native Mayan language.
ARE THERE MOSQUITOS or any harmful insects?
Yes, the tropical lush area attracts all kinds of spiders, scorpions, the odd snake and mosquitoes. We do keep bug spray and incense on site to help with this, however this really is a part of the remote wild experience of living at the lake. We advise all our guests be aware of where they walk and to empty out shoes and clothes pockets before putting them on. We also have a first aid kit and a nearby pharmacy should there be any emergency.
On the topic of mosquitoes, something very commonly contracted by these insects is Dengue Fever which really mainly affects those with weak immunity.
ARE THERE TAX FEES?
All guests are subject to a Guatemalan tourist tax, calculated at 10% of the room rate per night and anything additional purchased. This is included in each guest’s bill and calculated at checkout.
WHAT ABOUT TIPPING?
Tipping is not included in your package. If you would like to express your appreciation for the dedicated efforts of our housekeeping, management, and kitchen staff, you are welcome to leave cash in envelopes for them. These can be submitted to the retreat manager during your checkout. Only cash will be accepted so please ensure to withdraw cash from the nearest ATM or bring it along with you.
ARE THERE EARTHQUAKES AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS?
In Guatemala there are active volcanoes, which a few years ago has caused tremendous damage and destruction to the local village and although this was an extremely rare occasion it is good to bear in mind when deciding on which hikes to do in the area.
Earthquakes and tremors are periodically experienced but again are rarely destructive.
Landslides, mudslides and more also occur along with the heavy rainfall that is experienced and we have more of that info here in our Saasil guidebook.
ARE THERE water shortages at the lake?
Lake Atitlán will sometimes have intermittent water restrictions to ensure proper use of water at the lake. So you can expect that occasionally between 10pm and 5pm water will be shut off for this reason.
We advice guests to be mindful of how and when they use water and please note these times carefully.
